The Last Picture Show

Tonight was the last night for movies at several Toronto repertory cinemas. We chose to head to the Kingsway out at Bloor and Royal York to check out Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Casablanca. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the late show, but Raiders was certainly well worth seeing one more time on the big, out of focus, out of sync screen.

Hamilton the Beautiful

One of the few redeeming qualities of the urban nightmare formerly known as the Hamilton Eaton Centre is a glass dome which sits above the centre court of the mall. At the base of the dome are various copper figures carrying letters which spell out such ironic words as "Culture."

Probably the only sepia-toned building I've ever seen, the Medical Arts building on James Street stands as a massive hulk of a building housing various doctors and clinics related to the adjacent St. Joseph's Hospital.

Hey, how'd she get in here? Next....
Far off in the distance, Hamilton's steel industry continues to belch out poison while providing a healthy income to the ever-dwindling group of proud blue-collars. Sometimes, however, you have to concentrate on the beautiful right before your eyes. This shot was taken from atop the Escarpment near Concession and Upper Wellington Streets.
Atten...TION! This wonderful relief of an officer is located at the back (officer's) entrance to the Hamilton Armoury on Hughson Street.
All shots taken Monday, June 19, 2006 at various locations in Hamilton, Ontario.

Shaft!

Taken today, June 17, 2006 on Dundas Street East as well as Oak Street, in Regent Park, Toronto.

Slowly, the Regent Park public housing project, oops, can't call it a "project", is being redeveloped in a style more akin to the St. Lawrence pr....NEIGHBOURHOOD. This time, instead of warehousing the poor, oops, don't call them "poor", they're going to mix the income level of the residents up in an attempt to get everybody to get along. It'll be interesting to see how the Money Mart crowd will mingle with the monied in such a paradoxical environment. We shall see.

This morning, I spyed a fascinating sight: the elevator shafts of three demolished buildings. Soon, they will join the rest of the debris at the bottom of the, uh, shaft. In the meantime, we're given a unique opportuntity to see part of the skeleton of public housing.

Lakeview

Taken Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the defunct Lakeview Generating Station, Mississauga, Ontario.

With today's demolition of the (in)famous "Four Sisters", the era of locally-burned coal-powered energy comes to a close in the Toronto area.

Now the site can be overrun with Queen Anne's Lace and other, cleaner activities. Once the dust settles of course.

Poison

Taken October 1, 2005 at the Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto.

Prior to seeing Corb Lund and his Hurtin' Albertans, we bellied up to the bar to peruse the selection.

Pseudonym

Taken February 7, 2006 in my living room.

Actor Dann (2 N's) Florek has been played Law & Order: Special Victims Unit lieutenant Donald Cragen for the past 7 years. Previously, he was the original lieutenant on the original L&O.

One thing that few realize is that Dann is actually a pseudonym.

His real name is Dannn.

Betcha didn't know that ;-)

Last Call

Taken Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Islington Subway Station, Toronto.

Arrays of phones like this were once common on the TTC. For security reasons, many were tiled over and the phones placed outside the previously inset booths. The ubiquity of cellphones is slowly making the pay telephone obsolete, as evidenced here. Just wait 'til the next hour-long delay, though, and we'll see how much those three missing phones are missed.

When you have 10 minutes on a crowded platform to spare, why not whip out the old camera.
