It was announced on Thursday that Wal-Mart would be closing down the (always empty, higher prices than Costco, lousier selection, worse-tasting $1.99 hotdogs) six Sam's Club stores which dot the Southern Ontario landscape. Now, I got me a membership through work for $10 which basically allowed me to confirm that indeed they were nowhere near as good as Costco (at least in Canada), so I wasn't out all that much when they decided to shut the doors.
Meanwhile, back on Yonge Street...
The demolition of Sam the Record Man continues in earnest. They've already torn down the former CIBC building, leaving an empty corner, and revealing some of the old hand-painted signage that used to adorn the exposed brick on the south wall of the orginal Sam's store.
Also, the original facades of 347 and 349 Yonge Street are now exposed for the first time in nearly 40 years, having had the spinning discs (and for you sticklers, the previous THRIFTYS THRIFTYS THRIFTYS sign on 349) removed.

There's one less place to get your music fix on Yonge Street. Today's fatality is Sonic Temple, an outpost of sorts up at Yonge and Empress, across from North York City Centre. There's a discussion about the best (remaining) used CD stores in Toronto over at the BlogTO site, and from the looks of it, the CD is indeed going to wind up being the rich man's 8-track tape. Thanks, iTunes.

For the past few weeks, the bus I take in the morning has passed by a new cafe up on the Danforth, just east of Greenwood. I figured that today, I'd commemorate the U.S. president's visit to our nation's capital with my own visit to the Obama Cafe.
Now, there's absolutely nothing in this place that isn't covered in Obama's mug. Even the mugs!
Of course, the only way to sweeten your beverage is to either pick something artificial or some sweet brown sugar, sugar.
No, there wasn't a Joe Biden-themed beverage, despite the signage.
Unfortunately, I was hoping for a scoop, but the CBC beat me to it. Bastards.
So, you can keep your BeaverTails, Ottawa, the coffee here's just fine.
